Information about SWEDEN The depth and variety of Sweden's cultural heritage has been inspired by two main sources - nature with its clearly defined seasons, and its mingling with other cultures, from as far back as the Iron Age, through the Viking era up to the present day. Swedens simplest joys are fresh air, landscape and culture, all of which are free, while its cities beckon with urban delights. The passing of the seasons is enthusiastically marked by the Swedes and Midsummer, held at summer solstice, is Sweden's most celebrated festival. Walpurgis Night (30 April) is another pagan festival celebrating the end of winter with bonfires and fireworks Sweden offers a rugged natural environment that begs to be conquered. In the winter local children and enthusiasts take to skating on frozen lakes and canals wherever the ice is thick enough. Downhill and cross-country skiing are also popular, while in the summer, cycling is everybodys favourite way to take in the warmth. The dominant characteristics of the Swedish landscape have been left by glacial activity. The 7000km-long scenic coastline, particularly in the west and near Stockholm, is constantly cut by fjords (long, narrow sea inlets) and there are many idyllic islands offshore. It may not seem to get much drier inland, with about 100,000 lakes plugged into Sweden. When hungry, Swedes tuck into fish, which is usually poached or fried in lard. Pickled herring is especially popular and the potato is basically indispensable. As well as being versatile in cooking, spuds are critically important in the production of excellent Swedish aquavit. Aided by peace and neutrality for the whole 20th century, Sweden has achieved an enviable standard of living under a mixed system of high-tech capitalism and extensive welfare benefits. It has a modern distribution system, excellent internal and external communications, and a skilled labour force
